On April 5th 2005, ABC News anchor Peter Jennings announced to the world that he was battling lung cancer. It had been specualted for weeks that something was indeed amiss in regards to Jennings, who had missed covering the Pope's passing. When he announced his battle, he stated with strong will that he would be back. Everyone, myself included knew that he would be. Over his 50+ years of journalism, he had exhibited a tenacity unlike any other. It is that tenacity that made it much more shocking to hear that Mr. Jennings had passed away yesterday at the age of 67.
I had always been a news buff and had a great deal of respect for Mr. Jennings and his ability to throw himself headlong into a story. Not many journalists can do what he did, and many of todays journalists will have a lot to live up to to even approach the level of professionalism and compassion that he exhibited almost nightly.
He stayed ont the air for 60 hours during the September 11th attacks. He covered the civil rights movement and gained the respect of minorities when few could. He covered wars and tragadies, elections and scandals and did it exemplaryly.
He will be sorely missed.
